About Ha-Yarkon Park and Promenade Tour

Ha-Yarkon Park is the biggest and most varied park in all of Israel, stretching over 1,000 acres.

A magical nature tour into the vast, spectacular, green spaces and hidden corners of Ha-Yarkon Park. The park, river and promenade’s treasures provide pure joy and give an amazing nature experience right at the center of Tel-Aviv. The ride is on bike lanes exclusively, along Ha-Yarkon River, to the northern coast line.

In this tour, you do not cross any roads, as all the riding happens on wide, comfortable bike lanes along the river’s two banks. The ride also includes the crossing of several bridges.

This is a relaxed, light ride and does not demand a lot of physical effort.

The tour features a circular route, so you are free to start or finish at any location you choose.

The ride takes place along the two banks of the river. Going from east to west to Shefach Ha-Yarkon and Tel-Aviv Harbor, or from west to east up to Ya’ar Rosh Zipor, Sheva Tachanot and Ya’ar Bereshit.

Ha-Yarkon Park and River Tour has countless points of interest – ideal for convenient stops and relaxation.

Points of Interest

Ha-Yarkon Park / Ganei Yehoshua

A green lung of around 1,000 acres at the heart of the city. The park runs along the two banks of Ha-Yarkon River. Ben-Gurion, who foresaw the urban development, asked to leave a green lung at the heart of Gush-Dan (the central block of the country) in favor of the environment and the quality of life of the residents.

Ha-Chava Ha-Hakla’it

An agricultural farm located in the eastern part of the park, in Ya’ar Rosh Zipor. Throughout the farm there are petting zoos, wide stretches of wilderness and agriculture and also “Gina La-Toshav” compound which allows the city’s citizens to work the land.

Sheva-Tachanot

A historical and archeological site containing remains of seven gristmills which operates on the river’s banks in earlier eras. This spot features pristine nature, a wide array of wildlife and in our humble opinion is one of the most beautiful in the park.

The Park’s Lake

At the center of the park, lies the river. You can merge with the breath-taking scenery and relaxed ambience by walking around it or coast on it with a boat. You can rent boats on the river’s banks, your choice from pedal, rowing or engine-mounted boats.

Ya’ar Bereshit

This forest sports a different view from the rest of the park. Ancient Eucalyptus trees standing strong along the northern side of the river give the forest’s visitors a sense of “Bereshit” (genesis, beginning). The Forest is located on the eastern part of the park near Ramat-Gan soccer stadium and Ha-Meimadion.

Chavalim Park and Café Bereshit

Challenging rope and climbing facilities among the Eucalyptus trees and near the quaint, humble and relaxed Café Bereshit found within the compound of Ya’ar Bereshit. The café is open on weekends and is a perfect pit stop for relaxing.  www.yaarbereshit.co.il

Giva’t Ha-Mofaim

There is a big, green hill at the north-eastern part of the park used mostly for concerts, shows and festivals that hold large crowds. Many well-known artists from Israel and from abroad have performed here.

Ganei Yehoshua Wooden Playground

An old-school playground. The compound is built primarily from wooden beams used for climbing rigs, a maze and a balance-challenging walking lanes. Furthermore, the playground includes a zip line. Free of charge.

Stretching over 5 acres, this garden has walking lanes surrounded by tropical plants near flowing brooks, decorative fish, countless beautiful birds and a music corner. A very relaxing atmosphere.

Gan Ha-Sla’im

Boulders and big rocks from all over the country have been collected in this garden. This landscape provides a mystical feeling to this fascinating spot. Neat little roads snake around the rocks and up the hill is a hidden Amphitheatre surrounded by boulders in the style of Stoneage.

Ha-Gan Ha-Gazum

This garden contains trees and rose shrubs that can be pruned into different shapes. Near the shrubs there are small bodies of water, fountains, ancient mosaics and walking lanes. The garden reminds of classic royal gardens common outside of European castles.

Gan Ha-Kaktusim

A wide array of cactus plants are scattered in this garden. This is one of the central habitats for odd and wonderful cacti. Some of the cacti have been donated by collectors from all over the world.

Wahl Amphitheatre

Across from Ha-Yarkon River, south of Ganei Ha-Ta’arucha on Rokach Avenue lies the Wahl Amphitheater, used for open-air shows and events.

Hot Air Balloon

A 20-meter wide balloon, securely tied to the ground, rises to about 100 meters (330 feet) to allow a 360-degree view. The balloon can hold up to 30 people. The duration is around 15 minutes.

Merkaz Eretz Israel Ha-Yafa

A convention center of the council of Israel Ha-Yafa. In this compound, issues concerning the environment, sustainability and the relationship between humans and nature are discussed. The main building stands at the heart of a well-groomed garden on the northern bank of the river.  www.israel-yafa.org.il

Sportek

A large sports and recreation compound including basketball courts, a rugby field, trampolines, roller-skating rink, fitness rigs, wide patches of grass and much more.

Gan Ha-Banim

This sizable garden is used to commemorate the fallen citizens of Tel-Aviv from Israel’s wars. The names are etched onto monuments made from black granite rocks scattered across the garden in groups, based on the specific war and era.

The Amichai Daniel Center for Boating

This highly decorated and appreciated center is designed to look like an upside-down ship, signifying wreckage and loss. Through a lagoon and under the pedestrian bridge, rowers head to the river. www.drc.org.il

Ha-Yarkon Estuary

Ha-Yarkon is the longest of all of Israel’s rivers which stream to the Mediterranean Sea at 27Km long. Its’ sources are from the area of the city Rosh-Ha-Ayin in the east, and it ends adjacent to Tel-Aviv harbor, spilling into the Mediterranean Sea.

The Reading Power Station

This station has been founded by Pinhas Rotenberg in the year 1938 and was named after Lord Reading, a British-Jewish member of the parliament who acted in favor of the Jewish settlement. This station used to provided electricity to Gush-Dan, the central block of Israel.

Mezudat Shefach Ha-Yarkon

In 2010, the Reading Promenade was made open to the public and in 2016, the restoration of the keep facing the sea from the northern bank of the river’s estuary has been completed. Near the keep are archeological remains of a Hebrew community from the 7th century B.C.

Wokkof Bridge

The westernmost bridge out of all the bridges crossing the Ha-Yarkon river. Intended for the crossing of pedestrians and cyclists. This bridge connects the Reading promenade to Tel-Aviv harbor of the river. Built in 1938 by Sir Arthur Wokkof, the High Commissioner of Palestine.

Tel-Aviv Harbor

The harbor was built by Jewish laborers in 1938, and was used extensively up to 1965. In recent years, it has transformed to a lively tourist site. The grounds of the harbor are open 24/7. It is advised to be updated about the sites’ special activities and events at www.namal.co.il

All throughout the park and Tel-Aviv’s avenues are mobile, no-charge, public libraries. These libraries were introduced to promote the reading culture within the city. One of these lovely libraries is located between the wooden playground and Pinat Ha-Chai Bavli.

Lavatories and Drinking Facilities

Public lavatories and water coolers have been built along the riverbanks. The lavatories have been colored light-green for easy identification.

Ya’ar Rosh Zipor

From an aerial viewpoint, the area stretching east of Ayalon River and south of Ha-Yarkon River looks like a bird’s head (rosh zipor). Furthermore, the meeting point between the rivers looks like the beak and the hill like the bird’s eye. Therefore its’ name – Rosh Zipor.

Ayalon River

This river, which flows all the way from Jerusalem’s mountains, converges with Ha-Yarkon River in Ya’ar Rosh Zipor. The river runs along Ayalon Highway (Netivei Ayalon).

Gesher Rosh Zipor

Tips, recommendations and more information

Parking

There are 2 public, free parking lots which border the park from the east and the west. Those lots are ideal start and finish points for Ha-Yarkon Park and River Tour:

  1. Reading parking lot – west of the park, near Tel-Aviv Harbor. The entrance is from the west side of Rokach Ave. very busy on weekends.
  2. Ha-Chava Ha-Chakla’it parking lot – east of the park. The entrance is in front of 74 Rokach street in Ramat-Gan (a suburb of Tel-Aviv).

Food and Drinks

We recommend preparing a small bag with water and supplies.

You can choose from the many appropriate pit stops in the park and have a picnic.

Over the course of the tour and around the park there aren’t many restaurants or eateries. There is one café and one restaurant in the park that are fully accessible to bike riders – Café Bereshit located in Ya’ar Bereshit (open mostly on weekends) and Ha-Pina Ha-Yeruka restaurant, located on the northern riverbank in Merkaz Eretz Israel Ha-Yafa, next to Gesher Rosh Zipor and Netivei Ayalon. A short bike ride from the route of the tour, following the bike lanes, there are many restaurants and cafés in the Tel-Aviv Harbor area, along the promenade or near the park’s exit via Gesher Bar Yehuda to Ibn Gvirol street.

Ha-Ganim Ha-Ichudi’im

At the heart of the park are 4 magical and unique gardens: Ha-Gan Ha-Tropi, Gan Ha-Sla’im, Gan Ha-Cactusim and Ha-Gan Ha-Gazum. Free of charge, highly recommended!

Ya’ar Rosh Zipor Viewpoint

From an aerial viewpoint, the area stretching east of Ayalon River and south of Ha-Yarkon River looks like a bird’s head (rosh zipor). Furthermore, the meeting point between the rivers looks like the beak and the hill like the bird’s eye. Therefore its’ name – Rosh Zipor. You can relax and choose between 3 different bike lanes which travel all the way to the top of the hill and once you get to the top, enjoy the spectacular 360-degrees view which includes, among others, the coast from the west and the Shomron Mountains from the east.
